Energizer UB2607: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Reading Time: 4 min

At the beginning of this year, I shared my thoughts about JBL Tune 500BT Headphones which I use primarily for movies and video editing although it’s perfectly capable of handling phone calls. Due to its large size, however, I wanted something smaller to use with phone calls and Zoom meetings. I know, Apple AirPods is a perfect candidate but the cheapest available in Daraz Mall at the time of this writing costs Rs. 50,614/- (USD 137.16). Not a price I want to pay in this economy. The next step was to look for “Earbuds”. With a bit of googling, I found Energizer Wireless Earbuds UB2607 With Power Bank for Rs. 6,799/- (USD 18.42) from Singer. Unfortunately, I didn’t find a single review online. So here’s my take on the good, the bad, and the ugly about Energizer UB2607 Earbuds. I trust you will find it informative. Fun Fact: If your brand new UB2607 Earbuds are not charging see to it that you remove the protective film covering the contacts located on the inner side of the earbuds. I almost returned mine to the store thinking they were defective.

What’s so good about Energizer UB2607?

For an éntry level pair of earbuds, Energizer UB2607 flaunts some admirable features. Phone calls and media playback are crystal clear thanks to High-Definition audio. It uses Active Noise Cancellation Technology (I have no idea what that is but I do know it’s working) to filter out background noise. Apart from audio, the casing has a 2600mAh power bank integrated into it. The power bank can be used for charging your smartphone also. Although a 1,000mAh output can’t charge my smartphone to the brim it’s enough to keep the device alive until I can charge it. The LCD indicator shows the left and right earbuds’ battery level and charging status. (Jump to full specifications)

What’s so bad about Energizer UB2607?

You can find similar products for much cheaper on Daraz but I wanted a warranty coverage of at least 12 months. Most electronic items sold in Daraz are covered by a 6-month warranty or no warranty at all. Therefore, I ordered my Energizer UB2607 from Singer. I like what I bought but unlike the JBL Tune 500BT headphones the lack of multipoint connections (Ex: Connecting to my MacBook Air and the Oppo A12 at the same time. During an incoming call the headphones switch to the phone) is a bit of a deal breaker for me.

What’s so ugly about Energizer UB2607?

The only problem with Energizer UB2607 Earbuds is that it refuses to play nice with my MacBook Air. The audio pauses and starts again on its own while YouTube and Spotify both indicate video or the song is being played. Consequently, the earbuds keep on connecting and disconnecting. I experience the same problem even when playing back local media. Weirdly the earbuds get along very well with my smartphone. Fortunately, I don’t need them to work with my MacBook Air unless I am in a Zoom meeting and they work fine with Zoom.

Wrap Up

Considering the price and the features my final verdict on Energizer UB2607 is it’s not a poor investment for an éntry level pair of earbuds. They are not Apple AirPods, and they will never be but they serve my purpose. Although Energizer is not widely known for audio products I have the assurance that UB2607 is not a product of substandard quality. Other earbuds with the same features cost around twice or three times the price I paid for this particular make and model. Yes, the lack of support for multi-point connections and the inability to play alongside my MacBook Air are deal breakers but other than that Energizer UB2607 makes for a great pair of earbuds if you don’t want to spend a fortune or burn a hole in your pocket. Of course, there are better brands and models out there in the market but if you are like me and cannot afford them Energizer UB2607 is for you.

Update: 22 March 2024

On May 11, 2023, I accidentally put the right earbud into the washing machine. When I checked for damage, I noticed that the person on the other end of the calls couldn’t hear me, despite the microphone seeming to work when tested with recording software. I decided not to claim the warranty since the damage was my fault. Then, on March 16, 2024, I contacted Singer Customer Care. They advised me to take it to the Singer Service Centre in Maharagama. However, upon visiting, they said I should go to the Singer Computer & Mobile Phone Service Division in Colombo 2. When I declined, they directed me to PhoneDisplay—LK in the Amity Shopping Complex in Maharagama, who said they don’t handle Energizer products. I immediately called the Singer Service Centre in Maharagama, but the call centre representative blamed me for not specifying the brand in the beginning, which I found ridiculous.

Then she told me to take it to the Sony & BEKO Store in Borella. When I threatened to complain to the head office, I was told to return it to the Singer Service Centre in Maharagama, who would then send it to Sony & BEKO. On March 21, I received a call from Sony & BEKO, stating they don’t repair damaged earbuds but replace the defective products altogether. However, since the warranty for my item had expired, it couldn’t be replaced either. So here’s a word of advice: If you have a defective item that’s still under warranty, return it to Sony & BEKO for a replacement. If your item is working fine but the warranty has expired, handle it with care. If you’re considering buying earbuds, I suggest getting the SoundPeats Capsule 3 Pro, unless you want to end up having to return to the Sony & BEKO Store or, worse, losing your investment after 12 months (Even manufacturer defects are not covered by warranty after 12 months.).
